- REM is ‘rapid eye movement’ and it happens when our eyes move under our eye lids and it is our deepest of sleep
- REM sleep starts once we have been asleep for about 90 minutes and it comes in random bursts during the night, in totally approximately two hours
- During REM sleep, we are practically paralysed, only our heart, diaphragm, intestine muscles, blood and eyes are not affected by REM
- We spend around 1/3 of our lives sleepng
- We sleep for approximately six years or 2,100 days of our lives
- The record for the longest period without sleep is 18 hours, 21 days and 40 minutes
- You should fall asleep within 10 to 15 minutes of trying
- We sleep on average three hours less than other primates
- Teenagers and babies should have 10 hours of sleep, adults need eight hours and seniors only require six hours
- We can take a short nap with our eyes open
- The saying ‘good night, sleep tight, don’t let the bed bugs bite’ originates from Shakespeare times when mattresses were made of straw and were secured on bed frames by rope
