Capnip toys are great idea for keeping your cat entertained, they just go wild for them! Unfortunately, the allure does diminish over time and we find that we need to keep replacing them. Nonetheless, it’s relatively easy to make your own toys!
The main ingredient here is Cat Mint (Nepeta) and, luckily, it’s very easy to grow from seed. You can grow it in any well drained soil in full sun or partial shade, you can also raise it in pots, but may need to replace it with a new plant every 3 three years or so. Sow seed in Autumn in a seedbed or container placed in a cold frame. If you already have a plant, you can divide it in the spring or autumn or take softwood cuttings in early spring. Young plants can be damaged by slugs so you’ll need to give them some protection. Once your plants have established themselves, trim the new growth to use in the toy.
To make the toy, you’ll need square of material about 4-6 inches square, an old handkerchief is ideal. Put a handful of cat mint (take off any large woody stalks) in the middle and bring up the four corners, holding them together. Pinch the hankie close to the top of the cat mint so it forms a tight pouch and then tie it off with a piece of string. There you are! You now have a ball of cat mint that your cat will simply go mad over.
Cats at play can be fascinating creatures and sometimes it’s just impossible to resist getting the camera out to capture these moments. If you do, you may end up with some great fun filled shots. But don’t just leave it at that, send the best to a pet portrait artist and have the image created as an original work of art. It’s a fantastic way to personalise your home!
